Skylighter carries the three chemicals used in making black powder: Potassium nitrate. Charcoal. Sulfur. Although there are many formulas that can be used to make black powder, the "Waltham Abbey" black powder formula below is considered the standard by most black powder makers today. The percentages shown are by weight.
1. A rugged container (You can use PVC pipes or big plastic bottles) 2. An electric screwdriver (these are fairly cheap, I got mine for 10) 3. A bolt, a nut and maybe a washer. 4. Epoxy putty. 5. Steel or lead balls which in my case I substituted with screwdriver bits that I got for 3. 6. A vise clamp to hold down your ball mill.
Ball mills rotate around a horizontal axis, partially filled with the material to be ground plus the grinding medium. Different materials are used as media, including ceramic balls,flint pebbles and stainless steel balls. An internal cascading effect reduces the material to a fine powder.
Step 1: Parts and Tools Below are the parts and tools that I used to make this ball mill. However, keep in mind that these are more guidelines than anything, and I encourage you to experiment with different sizes, parts, and designs. The Finished Product, Ready to Grate. Now, place a 4mesh screen over a kraftpaperlined tray. Using quite a bit of force and pushing down, grate the BP ball across the screen to create ribbons and granules which fall down through the screen onto the tray. Grate all the black powder this way through the screen.
Process. While there are a few ways to approach the recipe, a good gunpowder mix should end up looking like the following ratio: 75% potassium nitrate / salt peter, 15% charcoal, and 10% sulfur. Whether you are dealing with a batch size of one pound or one hundred, the ratio stays the same.
Loading the Mill. A cylindrical shell revolves around its axis to form the ball mill. Metal balls (or other grinding medium) are fed into the mill together with the components of black powder (potassium nitrate, charcoal, and sulfur) within the shell. Using a ball mill to make mixed black powder is a specific operation, but safety is crucial.
Kaolin, I use the 1/4"x2" tubes available from Pyrocreations or I place a small piece of masking tape over the end of the tube to seal it, and use a nylonfaced hammer to ram enough increments to create a powder column just over 1" in length.

If one is milling only black powder ("BP") compositions, or the individual chemicals that make them up (potassium nitrate, sulfur, charcoal, dextrin), then only one barrel is necessary.
